What is a bail bond?

A bail bond is more like a contract than anything. Whenever you need to bail someone out of a jail, you will have to go to a licensed bail bondsman because he or she is one of the only people that could turn in a bail bond. The contract simply states that the defendant promises to show up to court after he or she has been bailed out of jail.

What should I know before calling you?

Some information that would be helpful is where the defendant was arrested, his or her full name, the booking number, and how much the bail is.

How can I get a bail bond?

In order to get a bail bond, you will have to either contact a bail agent or pay the full amount to the court and get your loved one out that way.

Do I get any money back after the case is over?

No, the money you pay for the bail bond is the fee for the risk that the agency has to take in order to get you out of jail.

What happens if the defendant doesn’t go to court?

If the defendant fails to appear to court, then the court will issue a bench warrant for his or her arrest. However, if you contact your bail agent, then he or she will be able to get the proper paperwork for you to get a new court date.

Can I leave the state if I am out on bail?

In order to leave the state or country, you will need to get permission from the bail agent that bailed you out of jail.

Are there some cheaper bail agencies out there?

No, it is illegal for any bail bond agency to charge anything lower than 8% of the full bail amount.

What do Bail Bonds accept as collateral?

You could use almost anything that you own and has value as collateral. However, the specifics of the collateral should be discussed with a bail bondsman.
